7th Wave Brewing – Medfield, MA

7th Wave

Your Beer Buddy has a confession to make.   Once upon a time I really didn’t think too much of 7th Wave Brewing

A visit I made in 2017 left me with a “eh” feeling.   The staff was super cool and friendly.  However, the taproom was rather basic and plain with no real life to it.   The beers were good, but nothing really stood out to me.   To be fair, they were brand new and finding their own legs to stand on.  However, I did have the feeling that, given some time, they had a lot of promise.

Well, my Beer Buddies. They certainly surpassed my expectations!

Located in Medfield, just off RT 27, on North Meadows Road, 7th Wave Brewing makes its home in a small industrial complex.

Going downhill, and staying to the right, leads you to their taproom at the far end of the roadway.   A sign in front of the parking spaces landmarks the location with a short uphill walk to the entrance.

As you journey up, you notice a cool, seasonal “backyard” seating area at the bottom of the hill.

You also notice an old Airstream sitting alone in an adjacent lot.   Once purposed to serve food, I found it a neat, unique piece of the experience. Hoping it could possibly be an adjacent taproom during warm weather.

A small neon “pizza” sign greets you just before you walk in. Once inside you enter a spacious seating area with tables and makeshift barrels that gives the vibe of a friendly neighborhood pizza joint.

The taproom area is quickly found where one can check out the draft/food menu or to observe the draft listings listed on a screen behind the counter.

You can order your beverages and take them outside (weather permitting) or go to the seating area where you walked in. A big screen TV is there for you to watch a sports show or event as you enjoy your beers.  There is also a small Merchandise section for one to go through for shirts and glasses.

For a more old-school brewery feel, for an area to sit with your beverages, you can wander further back into the game room.  Soccer billiards await for you to play or you can just take in the atmosphere of a more secluded section.

Speaking of game, the beer one at 7th Wave Brewing has tremendously improved since my last visit.

In large part to the talents of Brewmaster Brian Flach.  A veteran of the craft brewing game, Flach was once at Stellwagen Brewing in Marshfield, MA and developed many of their tasty beers.

He’s taken these skills to 7th Wave Brewing and has made some incredible offerings to the menu.  Many different styles to choose from such as New England IPA, Schwarzbier, Pilsner and Barleywine.  All with very cool music, movies and pulp culture themes for names. They also have a Hard Selzer on draft with 5 different flavors to choose from.

A very popular trend in breweries now is the availability of house made pizza. I’m not exaggerating when I say this place has, by far, the best your Beer Buddy has tried (inside or outside a brewery) in a *very* long time! These gourmet, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas are created in an “Old World” style and baked in a large oven located just adjacent to both the game room *and* the brewing equipment.  I enjoyed watching the chef work his magic on these delicious pies while I sampled my beer flight.

I indulged in the Marganara pizza, made with San Marzano tomato sauce, oregano, garlic, mozzarella, basil, Soppresetta and sea salt.  Even if you are not a beer fan, you *must* make the visit here for the pizza alone!

Another great thing about 7th Wave Brewing is its commitment to sustainability. It is only one of a handful of New England breweries that completely runs on solar power.  In fact, their solar array generates an amazing 200% of their energy!

When you look around the taproom you will notice their tables and display have a certain “made in a small wood shop” feel. That’s because 7th Wave Brewing uses old wooden pallets to create them.  A great way to repurpose wood that may have been just disposed.

A lesson I learned from my visit, and I implore you to learn as well, is always keep an eye on that brewery you once visited long ago that may not have initially ranked high on your scale.

With vision, renovation and talent that original “eh” feeling you once may have had can do a 180 and become an incredible brewery experience.   Just like 7th Wave Brewing is now.

One that, like for me, converts you to a now habitual visitor.
