On trips back from New Hampshire I would always see the signs on 495 for Tyngsborough. It used to make me chuckle. Not just for the funny sounding name but I’d also think “What could there possibly be worth visiting in a town named Tyngsborough?!” Not too long ago Modest Roots Brewing Company opened there. Then I read last Fall that a second brewery, Epigram Brewing Co. was setting shop in this MA/NH border town. Now that there was not just one but two drinking spots to visit in this northern town, a visit was definitely needed.
So glad I did.
Once you pull into the parking lot of Epigram Brewing Co. you spot their barn looking structure ready to greet you. Upon walking in you are pretty taken back by the amount of space available. 15,000 square-feet of space to be specific. To the right a well stocked merchandise section with apparel, glassware and cans-to-go. To the left a comfy lounge area.
Walking into the main hall you see a vast, spread out floor plan with a L-shaped bar and what appears to be an endless amount of tables.
With no vacancies at the bar itself, we took a seat at one of the tables and scanned the beer list. I was pretty amazed that there were 15 options available, not just in number but in variety of styles. Hoppy beers, naturally, dominated the selection but Light, Dark and Fruity were prevalent as well.
As a lover of West Coast IPA I went with a pint of the Coastal Crush first. I found it to be a perfect representation of the style.
To make sure I was able to run the gauntlet with different tastes I followed up my beer with a flight consisting of: Resist New England IPA, Passionate Fruited Sour, Mamaluke Italian Pilsner and the Nectar Dusk Honey Porter.
Epigram Brewing Co. not only has a lengthy beer list but it also offers up a lengthy food menu as well. From appetizers to salads to sandwiches, they give you plenty to choose from. In the mood for something different, we started with the Fried Avocado Bites.
All of the food items looked incredible but we knew before coming in what we were getting for our main dish; South Shore Bar Pizza. If you have visited the Southeast area of Massachusetts you are quite familiar with this personal sized, thin crusted round of deliciousness. All indications from previous visitors I talked to were saying that Epigram Brewing Co. made *the* best South Shore Pizza north of Brockton. After we split a pepperoni and onion, along with a bacon and sweet pepper, pair of pies we found that there were no lies told. Amazing pizza, baked on premise next to the bar area, both were flavorful and definitely worthy of any statewide contest.
For those not into the wonderful world of beer (if so, kind of curious why you’re reading this…) Epigram Brewing Co. also offers Wine, Cider, Seltzer and Non-Alcoholic options.
Curious to tour the facility, I grabbed another pint and took a walk around. First to their outside beer garden which would be amazing to sit out on during warmer months.
Back inside I was spotted by one of the staff members taking pictures and they suggested going to the upstairs area to view the lower floor. Making my way up you see a small seating area with a view of the bar, kitchen area, downstairs tables and the brewing equipment.
Up behind all of these on the far wall to you see a beautifully painted mural with the quote “I Can Resist Anything Except Temptation.” The author of this quote can be clearly seen but my college literature classes took me back to reading the works of Oscar Wilde. A bit of a mascot and inspiration for Epigram Brewing Co. you can see a lot of the witty and ingenious influence from Wilde in and around the brewery.
As a note, Epigram Brewing Co. has large capacity that can accommodate visitors with children. They even have a Kids section on their food menu. After some recent less than ideal situations, management went to social media to clearly state obvious expectations which I feel they handled perfectly. As listed on their website: “While we are a family friendly facility, our space and events are mainly targeted towards adults 21+. Children are welcome in our facility but we ask that they remain at the table for the duration of the meal. Any unsupervised children will be addressed with the parents.” Anyone who visits a brewery, kids or sans kids, should be respecting the space. If not, it should not be surprising if they are kindly asked to leave.
Overall, I found Epigram Brewing Co. a perfect blend of tasty beer and delicious eats. A brewery with a stellar food menu that wasn’t exactly trying to be a restaurant but more incorporating great fare along with their copious drinking menu. All the brews were enjoyable and again you just can’t turn away from the pizza. Super nice and accommodating staff as well.
A great reason to visit *that* town with the funny name!
